About the trainingThe Business Council of Co-Operatives and Mutuals (BCCM) will be delivering a governance workshop for co-ops and other small businesses. The BCCM is the peak body for co-operatives and mutuals in Australia. They unite these businesses with the common objective of increasing awareness of co-operatives and mutuals and the important contribution they make to the economy and community life. This one day course will build on existing knowledge and approach towards forming and maintaining co-ops. This workshop is suitable for all entities or organisations with board members that are looking to help align and or improve governance skills, promoting positive decision-making processes in a transparent and accountable way. There will be the opportunity for attendees to ask questions and seek inspiration and guidance around future growth. |
Course outline
The one day course will cover:
1. The co-op business model, what it is, how it works and its business advantage
- Aligning the current commercial co-op formation motivation of farmers with the wider co-op principles and values
- Connection into a global network and the value it provides
2. The Board’s role and focus
- Creating a shared understanding of the role of the co-op board – what they should do (and what they should avoid) to support effective governance and leadership
3. The job of directorship and office bearers
- Director and office bearer duties and member expectations
4. Member meetings
- The nuts and bolts of member meetings and how they fit into the co-op board, business model and rules
- Decisions – who makes what decisions and how they are made
5. Future co-operative strategy and structure opportunities
- Looking at Co-operative structures are possible at a community and regional level
- Interview and Q & A with co-op leader with extensive sector experience
