Dryland Pasture Walk & Talk

This event was a Central Murray Bestwool Bestlamb initiative funded by Murray Local Land Services through the Australian Government's National Landcare Programme.

16 people attended the Dryland Pasture Walk & Talk, most of whom were familiar or involved with the Economically Viable Options for Retired Irrigation Land (EVORIL) project. The field day was hosted on 1 of 7 trial sites, located at Murrayview and provided and overview of the project. The interactive field day was presented by project agronomist Damian Jones (Agronomic Results) and animal nutritionist, Geoff Duddy (Sheep Solutions). Topics covered on the day included:
  • Native and improved pasture quality and utilisation
  • A review of pasture quality at project sites
  • Matching feed supply to animal requirements- pasture growth curves, animal nutrition
  • Matching animal production to feed availability
  • How to maximise pasture longevity through strategic grazing
  • Establishing new pastures- do’s and don’ts
  • The results of the 2016 Swan Hill Show carcase competition- maximising flock performance

During the trial inspection, Simon & David Ettershank were able to share their experience about EVORIL pasture species on Murrayview and explain the relevance of this trial to their enterprise. After the field walk, participant returned to the Murrabit Sporting Complex for dinner and a presentation on sheep nutrition by Geoff Duddy.
