Explore the Potential of Australia's Inland River Delta for Sustainable Development |
|
As farming communities face growing pressure to meet ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) demands in supply chains, a new perspective emerges. Could our productive inland river delta be the solution? This biodiverse hotspot, acting as a significant carbon sink through on-farm wetlands and an advanced gravity-fed irrigation system, might just be Australia's prime site for environmental market investment.
Western Murray farmers, along with Barapa Barapa representatives and experts in various fields such as environmental markets, hydrology, archaeology, forestry, and wetland restoration, have come together under WMLIG (Western Murray Land Improvement Group). Their mission is to co-design a 'hydrated biolink' that maximizes economic, social, and natural benefits.
The focus is on crafting unique 'products' tailored for carbon and biodiversity markets, complementing agricultural growth and thriving communities without intermediaries benefiting disproportionately. Key points covered include:
When: 29th August 2023
9.45 morning tea for 10am start
Finish: 1.30pm
Where: Western Murray Land Improvement Group office, Murray Connect, 27 Thule Street, Barham, and lunch beside the river.
Cost: $0 for 30+ participants
Morning tea and lunch served.
Limited places. No entry without registration. RSVP essential by 5pm 25th August 2023

- Leveraging Grants: WMLIG members can tap into grants of up to $10,000 per landowner, presenting an exciting opportunity.
- Aggregated Projects: The group explores how collaborative projects offer a competitive edge.
- Regen Farmers Mutual: The Australian farmer-owned environmental markets broker, The Regen Farmers Mutual, supports the region due to its unique potential.
- Restoration Techniques: The benefits of landscape rehydration and restoration techniques extend beyond sustainability, enhancing profitability and resilience.
- Social and Ecological Gains: Ecological restoration delivers not only environmental benefits but also contributes to various social advantages.
- Cultural Insights: Barapa Barapa knowledge and archaeological findings shed light on the exceptional environmental and social worth of the region.
